Comprehensive Land Use Plan Update
Presently the Town of Mount Olive is partnering with the N. C. Division of Community Assistance to
complete an update to the town's comprehensive land use plan.
JOIN US EACH MONTH AT TOWN HALL ON THE 4TH WEDNESDAY EACH MONTH AT 3 PM.
The purpose is:
The purpose of the Comprehensive Land use Plan is:
To create a vision for the future of the Town of Mount Olive based on community needs and desires, and
to foster community support for this vision through education and awareness raising activities.
To prepare the Town of Mount Olive for the future by creating a guide for future growth that adequately
responds to development pressures from nearby urban areas (Goldsboro area).
To coordinate land use planning and infrastructure development in order to encourage desired
development densities, patterns, and locations consistent with Mount Olive’s vision for the future.
To survey community needs for and attitudes toward public services, facilities, and amenities in order to
improve the quality of life and protect the public health and safety.
To identify potential financing mechanisms and timelines for the provision of future public services and
amenities.
To preserve the small town character of Mount Olive, yet re-evaluate its image and community identity in
light of past trends and future changes.
To identify ways to enhance and invest in the community by working to improve the community image
and promote economic development opportunities.
To make recommendations for preserving and protecting community assets including unique historic,
cultural, and natural features and open spaces.
Cemetery Burial Plots
We are now allowing pre-payment for the opening and closing of burial
plots. If anyone is interested, they may contact Maylon Weeks or Martha
Rowe at 919-658-9539 ext. 108 and 919-658-9538 ext. 112 respectively
for a copy of the pre-pay contract
PARKS AND RECREATION
Parks and Recreation Director Chris Bitzenhofer continues to improve our Parks and
Recreation programs. Bean bag baseball has been a huge hit at the Senior Citizens
Building and competition gets pretty fierce at times. Chris is also working to get the
Southern Academy gym in playable shape for a winter basketball program. Summer
baseball and softball activities were very successful.
DEPOT RENOVATIONS
The Town has been awarded additional grant funding in the amount of $480,500.00 to
continue the restoration of the Historic Mount Olive Train Depot. This work should go to
bid in November or December and should be underway after the first of the year. This
will involve a complete restoration of the building’s interior with new bathroom
facilities, new kitchen, and new lighting. This will provide a wonderful companion
facility for the Steele Memorial Library when it is relocated to the old Belk building at the
corner of Main and Chestnut Streets. The idea of tying the two together with a reading
park on the corner of Main and Chestnut opposite the Belk building has been discussed.
SEWER COLLECTION SYSTEM WORK
Work has been delayed once again on our sewer collection system rehabilitation work
due to funding issues on the state level, but we continue to work to secure funding to
move forward with this very important project.
