Waste Water Treatment Plant

Our Waste Water Treatment is permitted to treat 1.6 million gallons per day. We are a regional treatment plant that serves Wayne and Duplin Counties. The plant is monitored and operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Water from the plant can be discharged in the Cape Fear River Basin at a rate of 1.0 million gallons per day while .6 million gallons per day can be discharged onto the Town's farm. There are 125 wetted acres in which the effluent from the treatment plant can be applied. The town has partnered with NC State and other agencies in doing studios to see what environmental impacts the treatment water has on the trees and plants on the farm.

Smoke Testing, Thursday, December 4, 2025 from 10:30 A,M. to 12:00 P.M,

The Town of Mount Olive will be conducting smoke tests of the sanitary sewer system in the 600 Block of North Church Street, the 100 Block of Tillman Street, College Street, Bell Street and Cleveland Drive.

This smoke test will reveal places where storm and surface waters are entering the Town’s sewers and where sources of sewer odors may exist.

The testing consists of forcing a special, non-toxic smoke into the sewer lines in your neighborhood.

The smoke is manufactured for this purpose and leaves no residuals or stains and has no effect on plants and animals.
Direct long-term contact with the smoke may cause some minor irritation such as sneezing, scratchy throat, and/or watery eyes. However, the duration of the testing in your area will be limited to reduce the potential of such symptoms occurring.

Smoke should not enter your structure unless:

You have defective, damaged, or improperly installed traps, tubs, basins, shower, pipes, and connections, or;
Infrequently used drains are dry

If you do see or smell smoke in your structure, immediately report it to Town Hall at 919-658-9539 Ext. 1 This may mean that harmful gases from the sewer may have been entering your structure.

Location, identification, and correction of the source of smoke entering your house is strongly recommended.
Do not be concerned if you see testing smoke coming from your rooftop sewer vents, this is normal.
While the Town’s Department of Sewer Collections will render all possible assistance, the correction of any defects in the pipes and sewer on private property is the responsibility of the property owner.
